The most remarkable cities often feature a rough exterior, deterring the less adventurous travelers, and Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, is no exception. On first glance, the city is alive with bustling tuk-tuks, traditional Ashok Leyland buses, and the cawing of black crows amidst the sweet scent of frangipani trees. However, a deeper exploration reveals a vibrant metropolis brimming with culture, innovation, and enthusiastic locals. From the uneven walkways of Colombo 7, where art spaces are tucked away, to the hidden buildings near Beira Lake hosting rooftop bars that offer exceptional cocktails, there is much to discover. This city warrants a few days on any Sri Lankan travel itinerary, providing an authentic glimpse of local life beyond the tourist hotspots on the south coast.

According to Ashok Ferrey in his book Cut Pieces, Colombo is the fastest-evolving capital city worldwide — a statement that resonates strongly. The photogenic Old Fort area showcases colonial-era architecture with its charming dark pink buildings, while the rapid development of Port City and Slave Island introduces modern structures at an astonishing rate. Amidst these changes, the familiar calls of the Asian koel provide a constant soundtrack to Colombo’s dynamic landscape.

Highlights of a 48-Hour Stay in Colombo

Day One

• Morning: Discover various museums
• Lunch at: Ranbath Organic
• Afternoon: Visit Number 11
• Drinks at: Eskobar
• Evening: Explore Paradise Road
• Dinner at: Table by Nyne

Day Two

• Morning: Visit Kelaniya Temple
• Lunch at: The ‘Stache
• Afternoon: Explore Pettah and Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque
• Drinks at: Uncle’s
• Evening: Bar crawl
• Dinner at: Gini

Must-See Attractions

● Immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s rich history at the Colombo National Museum (entry fee: £4), featuring stunning bronze Bodhisattva sandals from the 9th century. Nearby, the Sapumal Foundation, housed in a quaint old building in Colombo 7, displays around 300 artworks by notable Sri Lankan artists, including Lionel Wendt’s intimate black-and-white photography and Harry Pieris’s evocative oils (entry: free; @SapumalFoundation). Afterward, take a tuk-tuk ride (approximately £1) to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Sri Lanka (MMCA), just ten minutes away, for a glimpse of cutting-edge local art by emerging talents (entry: free; mmca-srilanka.org).

● Escape the heat at Number 11, the stunning home of Geoffrey Bawa, one of Sri Lanka’s most esteemed architects. Bawa’s tropical modernism is evident in his airy, open-plan designs, which you can explore on daily tours at 2pm and 3.30pm on weekdays, and at 4pm on Saturdays (entry fee: £13; geoffreybawa.com).

● Paradise Road, a well-known Sri Lankan brand, recently opened a flagship store at 138 Galle Road, showcasing its distinctive black-and-white ceramics, including mugs featuring Tamil and Sinhalese scripts, as well as an exhibition space and a concept clothing store with monochromatic pieces by local designers.

● While many visitors flock to Gangaramaya Temple, consider visiting the lesser-known Kelaniya Temple, located seven miles northeast of Colombo. This temple features intricate depictions of the reclining Buddha and breathtaking murals painted by the talented Walimuni Solias Mendis, taking over 20 years to complete. Dress respectfully for your visit (entry: free).

● The architecturally striking Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque in the Pettah neighborhood is painted in eye-catching red and white stripes and is a popular spot for photos. Enjoy the grandeur of its exterior from Main Street and 2nd Cross Street before venturing inside for a calmer experience (entry: free). On your way out, stop by Bombay Sweetmeat Mart for a refreshing falooda (a milkshake-like drink made with rose syrup, milk, and ice cream) and a homemade samosa (starting at 50p).

● Experience the local nightlife with the “dodgy bar tour,” hosted by Dilshan Sirisena and Adam Kenny from Soulful Sri Lanka. This two-and-a-half-hour excursion begins near Pettah and includes a visit to some of Colombo’s favorite bars, highlighting arrack, the nation’s traditional spirit made from fermented coconut flower sap (£55 per person; soulfulsrilanka.com).

Culinary Delights and Beverage Venues

Ranbath Organic

This beloved café offers a range of delicately spiced curries and local rice served on lotus leaves with coconut husk utensils (plastic-free). The buffet changes daily, featuring options like beetroot curry and spicy pol sambol (a coconut relish). Don’t miss the Lavariya, coconut wrapped in a string hopper (main dishes start at £2; @ranbathorganic).

The ‘Stache

Eskobar

For a charming view of the city, visit the jazzy bar Eskobar, perched by Beira Lake in Colombo 2. Its vibrant orange décor and South American vibe set the stage for creative cocktails, with top choices including the smoky Sour del Sol and the zesty Tamarindo (cocktails starting at £8; @eskobar.cmb).

Table by Nyne

Nestled in a tranquil cul-de-sac near Beira Lake, Table by Nyne’s intimate outdoor setting provides a perfect retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle. Guests are treated to quality service and exquisite food, blending European and local flavors—expect dishes like grilled barramundi with pumpkin gnocchi and buffalo curd sorbet (main dishes from £8; tablebynyne.com).

Uncle’s

With cinema-inspired decor, popular alcoholic beverages, and craft cocktails, Uncle’s remains lively during weekends. Enjoy small plates like mutton rolls or chili-infused cheese toast, and be sure to order the Rampe cocktail, a refreshing mix of Sri Lankan gin, pineapple, pandan, and coconut water (cocktails starting at £6; @uncles_colombo).

Gini

Gini excels in Colombo’s culinary scene, offering a creative menu packed with local ingredients. Highlights include curry aioli and fried prawn sausage, as well as white fish crudo served with nori. Their cocktails are equally impressive (main dishes from £9; ginicolombo.com).

Accommodation Options

Shangri-La Colombo

Offering stunning ocean views, the Shangri-La Colombo stands out with its luxurious spa and comfortable, sea-facing rooms. Overlooking the evolving Port City, enjoy the beautiful swimming pool surrounded by lush greenery and visit the Tiki Bar on the fourth floor, featuring creative arrack-based infusions.

Maniumpathy

This enchanting boutique hotel encompasses eight uniquely designed rooms, highlighting antique furnishings and luxurious amenities. Nestled within a historic colonial residence, Maniumpathy offers a serene environment in the upscale Cinnamon Gardens area, creating a perfectly cozy retreat. Be sure to enjoy a cup of Uda Watte tea at t-Lounge by Dilmah nearby.

Number 11

Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to stay in one of two suites at Geoffrey Bawa’s former residence, Number 11. Surrounded by Bawa’s favorite frangipani trees, this tranquil home retains its antique decor and original artwork, making for a truly unique stay (prices vary; geoffreybawa.com).

Travel Considerations

SriLankan Airlines services direct flights from Heathrow, taking approximately 11 hours. Bandaranaike International Airport is about a 45-minute drive from the city center, with taxi rides costing roughly £12, bookable through Uber or local app PickMe. While Colombo is accessible on foot, affordable tuk-tuks are a convenient option, which can also be rented via apps. It’s advisable to switch the app payment setting to cash, as card payments are often not accepted by drivers.

Note: Tipping is customary in Colombo, given the low wages for drivers, tour guides, and hospitality staff; a 10% gratuity is typically expected, with greater amounts appreciated if possible.

Responsible Travel

Sri Lanka is a stunning country that deserves ample exploration time. The northern regions, previously restricted due to civil conflict, offer rich cultural experiences alongside ancient sites nestled in lush jungles. While independent travel is feasible, hiring a local guide enriches the encounter with customs, culture, and history. Soulful Sri Lanka provides tailored tours that include Colombo and other unique destinations off the typical tourist trail.

Beau Gordon, a former TV producer and software designer from London, found himself yearning for more than the conventional path of career, marriage, and home ownership.

At 35, he reflects, “I used to have a very traditional life, but I felt a bit lonely. All those things sort of trapped me.” Feeling unfulfilled, Gordon decided to leave his job and ended his marriage before relocating to Northern California, where he stayed with friends who had recently acquired a property that included several houses, a treehouse, and a barn.

“I ended up living in this commune for two years and just loved that way of living,” he shares. “I loved how I felt so much more supported and connected to people. We shared food, looked after each other, and worked on the land together.”

In the last eight months, Gordon, who shares his adventures on Instagram under the handle @gaybritishbear and boasts over 100,000 followers, has actively sought out the ideal commune.

“I visited numerous existing communities,” he explains. “I dream of finding the right village, purchasing it, and filling it with queer individuals.” His search took him to Northern Italy, where he explored various communal living experiments, including a medieval village run by a cooperative and a shared home bought by a group of polyamorous friends south of Bologna.

Torri Superiore: A Community Years in the Making

Gordon discovered the eco-village of Torri Superiore in Liguria, a community established through a cooperative nonprofit organization.

This picturesque village, with homes dating back to the late 13th century, was transformed by a group of young Italian friends who moved there in 1989. At the time, the area had been abandoned for over 50 years and was at risk of collapse.

“Our goal was to save a village that had fallen into disrepair,” explains Lucilla Borio, one of the original founders. “The method for doing so was initially unclear.” After nearly 20 years, the group managed to acquire the entire hamlet, which consists of eight levels and 162 interconnected rooms.

“Though we now enjoy modern comforts, for years we lived without heating, electricity, or running water,” Borio recalls.

Due to Italy’s complex inheritance laws, it was challenging for the group to identify all the property owners. Many had no idea they owned part of a room there. Furthermore, they often found themselves paying more in notary fees than the property’s worth. “We’d purchase an uninhabitable room for, say, €2,000, but would pay €3,000 just to authenticate the deed,” she laments.

Borio also found love in the village, marrying Massimo and having three children. Today, Torri is home to nearly 30 residents and volunteers, with that number rising to 60 during the warmer months due to tourists and workshop participants.

Among those who have chosen to call Torri home is Simon Clissold, a farmer from Sydney, Australia. Clissold first visited the village in 2007, returning three years ago to purchase two flats outside the village. Now, he oversees agricultural efforts, including olive oil production and goat cheese making.

“The best thing here is the nature,” Clissold says, while surrounded by chirping birds. “You’re close to Nice, but it feels remote. It’s a short drive from the airport, yet you have the ocean and mountains right outside your door.” He believes the communal success story lies in the residents’ warmth and hospitality. “It’s very open; many intriguing people come through. Their longevity here speaks volumes about their commitment to community.”

L’Altra Riva: A Polyamorous Retreat

After his time in Torri, Gordon visited L’Altra Riva, a community in the Apennine mountains, which was previously a small hotel and restaurant.

Purchased by Jason Revere, a yoga instructor from New Orleans, alongside his Italian partner and two friends for €100,000 in 2023, L’Altra Riva has since been converted into a polyamorous community and yoga retreat.

“La Riva refers to a triangular peak in the valley,” Revere states. “We represent the other side: politics, culture, sex — interpret it as you wish.” Having lived in Amsterdam for two decades and still owning a yoga school there, Revere sought a “conscious community” similar to Gordon’s vision. “A friend discovered this property while cycling, and the price had dropped significantly, making it affordable for us to buy,” he recalls.

The purchase cost each of the four friends €25,000 in cash, however, this did not include renovation expenses. “We got a good deal, but it involved hard work,” Revere notes.

As with other communities, bureaucracy presented challenges. In their first summer, the owners lived without modern amenities while navigating the bureaucratic landscape to properly register the titles. They are now just one permit away from being classified as a bed and breakfast but will continue to function as a community house. “We encourage various forms of engagement — guests can stay, work with us, or simply enjoy the space as a hotel,” Revere explains.

Last summer, the team hosted their inaugural yoga retreat with 20 participants, and they plan to repeat the experience this year from June 28 to July 14. “We offer morning yoga, brunch, free time, afternoon sessions, and evenings filled with discussions about literature or philosophy,” Revere adds.

As Gordon considers the obstacles he faced with Italy’s bureaucratic system, he mentions the possibility of exploring property in Japan next. “They also have really affordable homes available. Hopefully, with less complicated regulations,” he concludes.

Q. During my recent visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, I admired several stunning water features. How simple is it to replicate one? Martin Lowe, London

A. Having participated in the construction of various gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show over the years, I can attest to the charm of the soothing sounds of flowing water. It’s no surprise that you would want to introduce this element to your own garden.

It’s important to understand that the filtering needs of a fish pond differ significantly from those of a water feature pump, so be mindful of this distinction.

To create a water feature, you’ll need a substantial water reservoir. If digging a large hole isn’t appealing to you, consider cutting a scaffold board into quarters to construct your own. By assembling it and placing it on a flat surface, you can create a robust square-metre-sized raised bed frame that can be lined to ensure it’s waterproof.

Since the raised bed has no base, it’s crucial to eliminate sharp stones that might tear the pond liner. Therefore, clear the area first, lay an underlay sheet within the frame, and carefully position your pond liner on top, ensuring it fits snugly into the corners.

Fill the structure with water until the liner settles in its lowest position. Once it’s secure, you can staple and trim the liner to the upper inside edge of the scaffold board.

Next, attach a timber capping rail along the top edge to cover the unsightly cut edges of the liner.

Now, it’s time to set up the water pump. There’s a wide variety of options to choose from, based on your budget, power source, and the type of water feature you wish to create.

For those without electrical access in their garden, a solar-powered pump is a convenient choice, especially one with a built-in battery for overcast days.

The pump should be placed underwater; when activated, it will draw in water and direct it to your desired outlet. You can opt for a simple bubbling cauldron effect, or be more inventive by incorporating a sculpture, which will require you to connect a hose from the pump outlet to the feature, using hose clips for security.

A crucial lesson I learned at RHS Chelsea is that water features should produce a soothing sound rather than a disruptive noise. Therefore, choose a pump equipped with a flow control valve to create a gentle trickling effect.

Earache can arise from various factors, including infections, injuries, or issues in nearby areas such as the teeth, jaw, or throat. Identifying the underlying cause is essential for appropriate treatment. This guide highlights common types of ear pain and recommended remedies. An outer ear infection, known as otitis externa or ‘swimmer’s ear’, typically occurs when water becomes trapped in the ear after swimming—particularly in lakes, rivers, or swimming pools. The warm and moist environment can encourage bacterial or fungal growth. Treatment options involve gently cleaning the ear canal (usually performed by a doctor using microsuction), administering antibiotic and steroid ear drops to combat infection and inflammation, and taking pain relief medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen to alleviate discomfort.

To prevent ear infections, make sure to thoroughly dry your ears after swimming; tilt your head to allow water to drain out. Use a towel to gently dry your ears, and avoid using cotton buds or inserting any objects into your ears. Consider wearing earplugs or a swim cap to prevent water from entering, especially in natural water environments. A middle-ear infection affects the area behind the eardrum and is more frequently seen in children, often related to colds or sinus issues. Treatment typically involves oral pain relief (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen), with most cases improving within a few days without the need for antibiotics. If symptoms persist or complications arise, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Other sources of ear pain can include barotrauma, where pressure changes from flying or diving lead to discomfort. To alleviate this, use decongestants or nasal sprays before flights or dives to help equalize pressure. Jaw problems, such as TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction or dental issues, may also cause pain that feels like it is originating from the ear. These cases should be evaluated by a dental or jaw specialist. Seek medical attention if the pain becomes severe, is continuous, affects your hearing, or is accompanied by swelling, discharge, or fever. If you experience unresolved ear pain after swimming, it’s advisable to consult your general practitioner. Avoid inserting anything into your ears and keep them dry, especially in the presence of an infection. Persistent or serious ear pain warrant evaluation by an ENT specialist to exclude serious conditions like tumors or deep infections.

Expert Insights by Gordon Harrison, Chief Audiologist

To effectively manage earache, it is crucial to comprehend the various underlying causes and apply the correct treatments. Ear pain can stem from several conditions such as ear infections, impacted earwax, or throat infections. Ear infections are prevalent, encompassing types like outer and middle ear infections, with symptoms including pain, swelling, and potential discharge.

Impacted earwax leads to discomfort and necessitates professional removal to avoid ear damage. For immediate relief, over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen can be effective. Applying warm or cold compresses to the affected ear may also help relieve pain. Elevating your head while sleeping might further reduce pressure in the ear. Should the earache persist, consulting a healthcare professional is critical. An audiologist can conduct a detailed examination and suggest treatments such as ear drops for infections or professional earwax extraction. They can also provide strategies to prevent future earaches, such as keeping ears dry and avoiding insertion of objects into the ear.

Ear pain is quite common in children, especially following a cold. Indicators include rubbing or tugging at the ear, elevated temperature, and restlessness. While home remedies may offer short-term relief, ongoing discomfort necessitates professional evaluation to ensure appropriate treatment and avert potential complications.

As we navigate around Gangxid Kun, also known as Cape St James, we find ourselves at the southernmost tip of Haida Gwaii, an expansive archipelago located roughly 62 miles off British Columbia’s rugged northwest coast. This stunning group of over 150 islands and 1,800 islets is positioned near a continental shelf where a dramatic 2,800-meter underwater cliff plunges into the depths of the Pacific, which stretches out toward Antarctica.

This part of Canada is known for its fierce winds sweeping across miles of open water, making it a destination for adventurers. As we round the cape, GidinJaad, a member of the Haida Nation, performs a ritual for our safe journey, lighting sage and sending fragrant smoke into the air using a feather from a bald eagle, which dances in the breeze above her intricately tattooed features.

Onboard the luxurious 138-foot catamaran, Cascadia, our journey includes dedicated crew members such as Captain Jeff Harvey and mate Bryn Flanagan, who skillfully navigate through the surf. Our mission is to explore the spectacular wilds of Gwaii Haanas, situated just a two-hour flight from Vancouver. The Haida language refers to these islands as the “Islands of Beauty,” although they were known as the Queen Charlotte Islands due to the name of an 18th-century British ship, despite the Haida people having occupied this area for over 13,000 years.

Before the arrival of Europeans in 1774, tens of thousands of Haida people thrived along these shores. Tragically, the arrival of European diseases like smallpox and influenza drastically reduced their population to fewer than 600 individuals. The poignant history of the Haida is marked by the severe impact of colonialism, which disrupted their oral traditions and cultural practices from the 18th through the 20th centuries.

As I reflect on this complex legacy while observing the serene beauty of the spruce-covered islands and rocky cliffs inhabited by barking sea lions, I find solace in the boat’s onboard library filled with texts on natural history and Haida culture. These resources are made available to enhance our understanding of the land we are exploring.

Comfort finds me amidst the gentle sway of the boat, with the capable steward Blythe ensuring my refreshments. Freshly baked cinnamon rolls accompany an abundant breakfast that includes Canadian pancakes, local berries, and hearty lunches. The dinner presentations of salmon steaks and grilled meats are elegant, enjoyed alongside fine wine.

“I have this tattoo on my chin to symbolize a prayer for unity, that we all belong,” GidinJaad explains, revealing the significance of her artwork depicting a raven and eagle supporting one another. Each Haida identifies with one of the clans—Eagle or Raven—following their mother’s lineage in this matriarchal society. GidinJaad, along with our naturalist guide Phil Stone and Marlo Shaw, meticulously share the depths of Haida history and the vibrant ecosystem surrounding us.

Over the span of a week, Cascadia takes us on a breathtaking exploration of this untouched territory. Departing from Skidegate on Graham Island, our route includes stops at idyllic inlets and islands to appreciate the diverse ecology. We meander through ancient forests of red cedar and Sitka spruce, some trees thought to be over 1,000 years old, and we explore unblemished beaches where chanterelles flourish and giant banana slugs crawl among the skunk cabbage.

As a region recognized as a Haida heritage site, national park preserve, and marine conservation area, Gwaii Haanas showcases the cooperative management established between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government in 1993. Some sites have “watchmen”—Haida descendants who reside there, protecting the land and sharing stories with visitors. Many locations, however, remain uninhabited. The captain optimizes our itinerary based on weather conditions and other boats we may encounter.

Among the remnants of the Haida culture are longhouses and carved poles, increasingly returning to the earth as they slowly deteriorate on these remote shores. Walking through these sacred sites, once adorned with intricate carvings of totemic animals, provides a profound connection to the past and the vibrant energy that resides in the air.

Wherever we walk, we navigate paths lined with clam shells, and the nature surrounding us sings melodies in the gentle breeze. The daily rhythm of my stay lulled me into restful nights in my cozy wooden cabin, complete with deck access for night sky gazing.

One morning, as dawn breaks, we embark on a canoe adventure in the bay where we spent the night. Curious seals glide alongside us, surfacing to peer over the kayaks. The vibrant underwater life of starfish, sea slugs, and clams is visible through the clear waters, creating a vivid contrast with the sounds of nature around us. After our excursion, I retreat to the top deck and enjoy the hot tub as we gently traverse back into the vast Pacific.

Late one afternoon, we embark on a tender ride through GaysiiGas K’iidsii (Burnaby Strait), witnessing the incredible beauty of vacant beaches scattered with driftwood and observing black bears scavenging along the shore. Oystercatchers swoop and pigeon guillemots take off in unison as we pass, providing endless opportunities for exploration and discovery during our journey.

Our time in Haida Gwaii teaches us invaluable lessons about respect for the Earth. Reg, a watchman at the site HIk’yah GawGa (Windy Bay), reminds us of this common thread: ‘We must look after our planet, no matter our backgrounds.’

In May 2023, my life took a devastating turn. On a seemingly ordinary spring evening, two police officers arrived at our west London home to deliver the heartbreaking news that our beloved 21-year-old son, Omar, a university student, had taken his own life. Even after two years, I struggle to articulate the profound aftermath of this tragedy that lingers with me each day.

Omar was nearing the end of his second year studying biosciences at the University of Liverpool. He seemed genuinely happy, thriving, and full of passion for life. Just weeks prior, my husband, Rashid, and I had remarked on how proud we were of Omar’s successful transition into adulthood. We felt comforted knowing he was doing well at university, embodying the qualities of a mature, empathetic, and wise young man. Our worries seemed distant, but just nineteen days later, Omar was gone.

The shock of Omar’s suicide was overwhelming. Breaking the news to our other children, Talib and Afra, was the most painful experience we’ve ever faced. Omar and Talib, nearly the same age, shared an unbreakable bond throughout their childhood, while Afra, as the youngest, was always cherished by Omar. Our family now grapples with the emotional devastation of an unforeseen disaster. There were no indications that Omar was struggling; he appeared to be the embodiment of health and happiness. This reality underscores a chilling truth about suicide: it can affect anyone, at any moment.

Following his death, we discovered that Omar had confided in a close friend about feeling anxious, but he never expressed that he was suicidal. Why did he keep such thoughts to himself? Omar was deeply aware of the love surrounding him and must have understood that his actions would shatter our hearts. I believe he experienced profound shame about contemplating such a drastic choice, which may have led him into a painful cycle of secrecy. The weight of concealing such a heavy burden likely deepened his sense of isolation. It’s unbearable to imagine the suffering he endured.

There is a pressing need for open conversations about suicide. I am convinced that had Omar felt he could discuss his darkest thoughts, he might have been able to lessen their hold on him and seek help. However, on the night of his death, he may have reached an intolerable place of despair, entering a state where rational thinking is overwhelmed by instinctive survival responses. The tragic irony may be that in seeking relief, my son chose to end his life.

After his passing, we began supporting James’ Place, a charity dedicated to providing vital free help to men facing suicidal crises in locations such as Liverpool, London, and Newcastle. I firmly believe they could have offered our son the support he needed, had he been able to reach out in time.

Since losing Omar, I find myself reflecting on and discussing suicide daily, giving a voice to what he couldn’t articulate. I share my son’s story openly, and often, this prompts others to offer their own experiences of losing someone to suicide. Many express gratitude for the conversation, and some feel relieved to finally speak about their own hidden grief.

Now, our family faces an ongoing struggle with profound pain and no clear path through this unfamiliar territory, yet we strive to move forward with love. Talib is the age Omar was when he passed and is training to teach history and math at their former secondary school. Afra is pursuing her education with determination in sixth form. They appear to embrace life for their brother with renewed vigor. While I cannot fathom their loss, I am immensely proud of their resilience.

As Omar’s mother, he is ever-present in my thoughts. Our deep bond continues to fortify me throughout this journey of grief. His love, despite his absence, has become a source of strength for me and an additional anchor in my marriage. Life now intertwines joy and sorrow, compelling me to celebrate both. Most importantly, I feel driven to understand how this tragedy unfolded and to help prevent similar heartbreak for other families.

While society is progressively improving discussions around mental health, suicide remains a significant taboo. In the past, broaching the subject of suicide when discussing mental health with my children never crossed my mind. Now I recognize that feelings of being overwhelmed and thoughts of ending one’s suffering are more common than many dare to accept. It is crucial to communicate with our children about these feelings so that they recognize there is no shame in reaching out for help. Additionally, we must learn how to address the issue candidly when a loved one dies by suicide to avoid perpetuating the shame and secrecy that may contribute to such tragedies.

In the UK, suicide is the leading cause of death among individuals under 35, with a staggering 75% of these cases involving boys and young men. Last year, I created a website to honor my extraordinary son and promote further dialogue about suicide. I hope it can encourage other young men like Omar to share their hidden struggles, as talking about suicide can and does save lives.

When it comes to finding souvenirs, tourist shops often receive criticism for selling items that may end up discarded, yet the desire to bring back a tangible memory from a trip is perfectly natural. As part of a family that has made souvenir buying a cherished tradition across generations, I understand the importance of selecting items that truly resonate. While my travels have filled my home with beloved mementos, I must admit, some purchases, like door handles, might not have been the most practical choice.

In Scandinavia, the charity shops, particularly Humana in Sweden, are fantastic places to hunt for unique fashion finds. With locations in cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, these shops offer a treasure trove of secondhand goods. Last year, while visiting a Red Cross shop in Vejle, Denmark, I scored vintage 1960s dresses, mid-century serving dishes, and a classic 1980s Christmas mug from Royal Copenhagen for under £20, an experience that highlights the joy of thrifting. Though flea markets can also yield distinctive souvenirs, it’s important to be mindful; for example, those appealing old tiles you see in Portugal might come from demolished structures, so it’s wiser to purchase from reputable ceramics retailers instead.

2. Explore Museum Shops

The notion that my grandparents once purchased authenticated antiquities from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo in the 1920s is astonishing. You can still find meaningful items in museum shops that connect you to art and culture. For instance, the London Transport Museum’s shop features unique items inspired by the iconic Tube designs, while the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town supports local artisans, making it a great stop for jewelry and other creative pieces. The Museum of Modern Art in New York is another highlight, especially for home goods.

3. Practice Discerning Spending

In Egypt, it can be challenging to navigate the shops outside temples where much of the merchandise is mass-produced and sourced from factories with questionable labor conditions. However, I found Malaika pottery, crafted by local artists near Cairo and featuring fair-wage embroidery, an ethical alternative. These products are available in various shops around Cairo and the Red Sea area, ensuring that your purchase supports local artisans.

4. Consider Hotel Gift Shops

If you find yourself short on time yet eager to shop, don’t overlook hotel stores. Many upscale hotels feature collaborations with local artisans, offering items like beautifully crafted bags from the Passalacqua hotel in Lake Como, or stunning woven placemats made by Zulu artisans sold at Singita hotels in Africa. Items like these not only serve as lovely reminders of your travels but also support the local economy.

5. Prioritize Practical Purchases

Over the past two decades, I have consistently bought my glasses from Ottica Carraro in Venice, marveling at their frames crafted in the Veneto region. While some may scoff at the idea of buying glasses while traveling, I appreciate supporting a local business amidst a sea of tourist traps. Plus, the ability to pick up new pairs on future visits serves as an excuse to return to this enchanting city.

6. Don’t Overlook Supermarkets

Supermarkets can be surprisingly good sources for interesting souvenirs. From flavorful hot sauces from Grenada to beautifully designed tins of Portuguese sardines, these items provide an authentic taste of the region. I’ve even picked up stylish wine glasses in Spain at a fantastic bargain, making them perfect for a memento that doesn’t take up much space.

7. Focus on Souvenir-Friendly Destinations

Certain places are especially renowned for their unique souvenirs. For instance, Japan boasts an incredible array of stationery, making it a must-visit for those who appreciate quality supplies. In Turkey or Morocco, consider investing in a beautiful rug that adds personal significance to your home. Bali is another destination known for its strong craft traditions, particularly around Ubud, which often leads to irresistible finds in ceramics—but ensure you’re aware of the customs regulations regarding higher-value items.

8. Embrace Free Souvenirs

Not all memorable items require spending. For example, my parents still use a gravy jug gifted to them from a memorable dining experience in the 1970s in Rome. Items that friends collect during their travels, like placemats from favorite cafés, also serve as cherished reminders of shared moments.

9. Keep a Relaxed Attitude

While it may be tempting to seek out high-value items, sometimes the simplest souvenirs bring the most joy. A quirky umbrella featuring a local design can brighten a rainy day or serve as a fun reminder of your trip. Don’t hesitate to indulge in lighthearted purchases; they often hold more sentimental value than any expensive item.

Q. My family and I are preparing to leave our rental property. Unfortunately, an incident with my energetic children has left a small hole in one of the plasterboard walls. Can you suggest a straightforward repair method so we don’t risk losing our security deposit? – Ocea, Dartford

A. It’s common to encounter holes in plasterboard, a material that consists of dried gypsum between two layers of paper, making it less durable than other wall materials.

For a simple repair, you don’t need professional qualifications — even a novice can handle this fix, especially if the hole is under three inches in diameter.

Start by cleaning up the hole’s edges, removing any loose paper and gypsum. Following this, lightly sand the area, as this will facilitate a smooth finish later. Cover the hole with self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape (commonly referred to as scrim tape) to ensure proper adhesion. After that, apply ready-mixed finishing plaster using a filler knife or any similar flat tool, making sure to spread it over the tape until it is smooth and slightly raised above the wall surface. Once the plaster has dried completely, use fine sandpaper to gently smooth it down until it is flush with the wall.

If the hole exceeds three inches, relying solely on scrim tape may not provide adequate support for the new plaster. In such cases, you should first enlarge the hole to create a uniform shape, ideally a square. Cut a piece of wood that fits snugly into the gap and is just thick enough for screwing into place yet narrow enough to fit through the hole. This piece of wood will provide a solid backing for your repair.

Fasten a screw in the center of the wood before you insert it. This screw acts as a handle for positioning the wood securely against the plaster surrounding the hole.

When the wood is secured, remove the screw used as a handle. Cut a piece of plasterboard to fit the hole and screw it firmly into the wooden backing to ensure stability. Note: Before purchasing a full sheet of plasterboard, check with local hardware stores, as they often sell damaged boards at a reduced cost.

After covering the hole with new plasterboard, apply scrim tape over the joints and screw heads, then finish with plaster as mentioned earlier.

I wish you the best of luck in reclaiming your deposit after following these tips — it should feel like a notable DIY success!

What makes a city perfect for a romantic weekend escape? Is it the charming canals and historic architecture, or perhaps exquisite dining experiences matched with picturesque streets? No matter your preferences, this guide offers numerous ideas for a dreamy European getaway. We’ve compiled a list featuring both iconic destinations—such as the ever-popular Paris—as well as some hidden gems. Each entry represents a different country, ensuring diversity, and we’ve included warmer locations like Seville and Valletta for those looking to escape to sunnier climes in early spring or late autumn. Here are the European cities guaranteed to steal your heart.

Who could possibly resist the enchanting allure of a city built on water? Venice, with its captivating canals, is best viewed from a boat—just skip the gondola rides. Instead, opt for an early vaporetto ride from Piazzale Roma to secure a prime spot for viewing the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge for a budget-friendly fare. As night falls and the buildings are illuminated, take a romantic stroll to the Osteria Fanal del Codega by the water for some delicious tiramisu, and don’t forget a toast at the famous Harry’s Bar, where the original Bellini was created.

Plan Your Trip

Situated along the Grand Canal and popular among couples, Hotel L’Orologio Venice features a sophisticated bar with plush leather seating.

2. Paris, France

While you might consider climbing the steps of Montmartre to the Sacré-Cœur, ascending the Eiffel Tower, cruising the Seine, catching a show at the Moulin Rouge, and admiring the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, there’s a more relaxed—yet equally romantic—approach to experiencing the City of Love. Forget a lengthy checklist; instead, wander aimlessly through the quaint Latin Quarter or the artsy Marais district. Take moments to browse local markets for cheese or enjoy some frites at a street café. An intimate dinner should be in a classic bistro, where the atmosphere buzzes with lively conversations and the delicious aroma of garlic lingers.

Plan Your Trip
